Anthropic, an Artificial Intelligence company formed by former ChatGPT workers and in which Google has invested 400 million dollars, has just launched a job offer for a position never seen before: phrase finder to give orders to chatbots. The job consists of designing the best instructions for robots to give the exact answer to what users are looking for. And the salary on offer is at the level of any Silicon Valley engineer.

The position is called “prompt engineer”, that is, the text that users write as instructions for the AI to start working. The goal is to find the most accurate phrases that produce the best results, so that they can be offered to users as default predetermined commands. With them, they could write user guides for the programs and make tutorials. The only technical requirements are to know the Python programming language and “that you like to solve puzzles”.

In return, the company offers a salary of “between $250,000 and $335,000,” in addition to company stock, health insurance, pension plan, help for moving to San Francisco and “between 4 and 6 weeks of vacation.” Conditions worthy of the most experienced engineers of the big technology companies in Silicon Valley.

This announcement anticipates one of the great trends that are coming in the coming years: not only engineers are needed to design programs that are able to talk to users or create content. We also need experts in deciphering how they ‘think’ these tools, knowing how to extract the best from them and being able to explain to normal users how to use them in the most efficient way.

This is, in the end, the result of the exponential growth of AI: programmers and designers themselves are not able to understand 100% the program they have created, nor to fully predict its operation. Some of the strangest moments of recent days in ChatGPT have been given by users who formulated their questions in a way that led the chat to insist that we are in 2022 or to suffer an existential crisis when they realized that it was a robot created by the human being. Just as important as programming these bots correctly is knowing how to ask them the right questions. And Google is willing to pay well for someone who knows how to ‘talk’ to robots.
